[postlink]https://iamdaowner.blogspot.com/2012/06/free-vector-hearts.html[/postlink]
Since its almost valentine I’ve created some free vector hearts to share. You may find hearts from the set ranging from different genres of art from black gothic to funky isometric/3d to cute flying hearts perfect for designing cards and a nice addition to your toolbox of vector elements.
I’m thinking of making a tutorial on the heart with white feathers, what do you think?

Ok It’s our second day for the tutorial, this time we will do the colors, shadings and highlights. Let’s begin and open up our Illustrator again and let’s get back to where we are last time.
Hmm…lets see, ah yes this is the one.
s20.gif
Color Flats
Now from this state we’ll add in some colors, first let’s start with the nose, click the nose and from the color picker choose a carroty orange. By the way the color mode I used in this tutorial is CMYK, which would be ready for printing If you want it to be printed. Mine is C=0, M=50, Y=100 K=0 or F7931D for RGB
nose_color.gif
Next we move on to the twigs, choose a brown one for these. Just type C=32 M=48 Y=76 K=20 or 967348 for RGB.
twigs_color.gif
We now move to the two big lumps of snow. To clearly see the parts that you wanted to color, let’s try and use some object hiding, choose an object that you want to hide and press Ctrl + 3 now it’s hidden, try it on another. Don’t worry we’ll bring them back later, the good thing is that we can clearly see the objects that we wanted to color, choose a sky blue for the two After having the colored the body and head. Press Ctrl + Alt + 3 and there you go, the hidden objects are back, this shortcut really helped my workflow especially when trying to do some of this kind. Lets use C=32 Y=0 M=6 K=0 or for RGB.
snow_color.gif
That leaves us with the scarf as the last, let’s choose crimson red C=25 M=100 Y=100 K=0 orC0272D to compliment his hat and use the same colors as well.
scarf_color.gif
So now we have made the color flats. Let’s move on to the next step
Highlights
Ok so now that we have set up the color flats, its time for some highlighting. Let’s first think of where do light would come from, in this tutorial will assume that the light is coming from above. With that in mind, let’s begin adding some highlights. We will be using some mesh tool andgradients a lot.
Let’s begin with the hat from the crown tip, pick a light gray and use the mesh tool click the at the center do the same for the brim and the red tab to produce a similar effect.
hat_gradient.gif
Next is the body and the head, again let’s Hide (Ctrl + 3) some objects leaving only the objects we needed. With nothing selected pick white, next is to click Mesh Tool (U) from the toolbox, Move the mouse over the body and click on the center.
Oh no the strokes are gone! Never fear mighty mouse is here! Errr…I mean Click Window >Appearance and click the little arrow and you’ll see the options to Add New Stroke. Set the weight to 3 pt and there you have it, strokes are back.
Do the same thing for the head.
hat_snow_gradient.gif
Let’s continue with the nose, again with nothing selected pick a color lighter than orange nose, click the Mesh Tool and then click the middle part as shown below:
nose_gradient.gif
For the hands I only used the gradient tool, its just to thin to put some mesh in it
hands_gradient.gif
The scarf seems a tad bland; let’s add in some stripes to add more detail. Using the Pen Tool, create polygons along the scarf and leave it without any strokes, use a white fill.
stripes.gif
Shadows
Now we move on to the shadows, this is optional if you want to add some shadows or not, but suggest you do add some because it adds depth to a piece.
We begin by Locking (Ctrl + 3) all objects, for this tutorial we will not add in all possible shadows but the obvious ones instead: nose, hands, head, hat.
For all the shadows the settings will be: a gradient from white to black and the blend mode set tomultiply.
Begin creating, shadows as shown below:
shadows.gif
Lastly, well add in a shadow below for the whole object. This one has a different setting for we will use a mesh tool instead of gradient. Create a white ellipse, pick a dark gray color, use the mesh tool and click the middle. Put it under our snowman and set the blend mode to multiply. Add a little spark on the eye.
And there you have it, our snowman.
complete.gif
Next day we’ll add the snowman to a background similar to what I’ve done to the post card from the first day.

With me nothing to do after office hours, I decided to make my very first freebies in my downloads section. I’ve been using Illustrator for quite some time and I think I wanted to share something for my fellow designers.
Free Vector Objects - Spiral Sanctuary
Above is a sample screen shot that of the objects included on the set. Using only 1 pattern, added some minor tweaking using Pathfinder and Filters. The set that I’ve created contains various patterns and spiral elements best for use as add-ons for some of your artwork. I will be uploading more freebies just like this one for the coming weeks. Hope you liked it.
Downloadable in EPS and AI format

[postlink]https://iamdaowner.blogspot.com/2012/06/how-to-create-vector-gears.html[/postlink]
Hi people, I’m still alive and back for more tutorials.
I have seen tutorials on gears here and there but I still seek the fastest and easiest way, you really don’t have to learn super skills to do that kind of result, you just need imagination.
.
• Software used: Adobe Illustrator CS3 – you may use other similar vector-based editing software but the instructions written are made to work well on Adobe Illustrator CS3
• Difficulty – Beginner
.
In today’s tutorial I’ll teach how to create vector gears or cogs in Illustrator:
samples
Ok then let’s rock, first select your star tool, then drag across the stage, but before you release it, here’s a couple of tricks that I want to share with you.
• Pressing Spacebar-Drag: re-positions the before releasing the mouse button
• Pressing Ctrl-Drag: modifies its outer points, useful if you want your star to be super pointy or fat-looking
• Pressing Shift-Drag, creates a star without rotation
• Pressing Alt-Drag Keep the sides of a star parallel
• Pressing Alt-Shift-drag, creates a star with parallel sides without rotation
In this tutorial, we’ll use a 10-sided star, use arrow up and down, to increase the sides of our star.
create a star
Hold Alt-Shift before releasing it, our end-result should look like the one below, before we continue lets make our fill transparent and our stroke 1px, black so that there’d never be a problem in expanding our object:
parallel-sided star
With our star still selected, go to Effect > Stylize > Round Corner.
Ok so why not use Filter > Stylize > Round Corners instead?
Here’s why, using the first technique, you can preview how much roundness our shape has become, but if you’re really sure about the roundness and an expert at calculating it, then you may do so, I still recommend using Effect.
round corners star
Reviewing the roundness of our edges, let’s stop at this setting with 5 px roundness (depends on the size of the star). If satisfied let’s choose Object > Expand Appearance and continue with our next step.
expand appearance
Next let’s go to Object > Path > Simplify, from the opened window let’s choose this setting:Straight lines should be checkedAngle Threshold set to 0, then Click OK. Notice our round corners get straightened.
simplify path
With our gear selected, open up Stroke or press Ctrl + F10 set the stroke to outside and stroke weight to 5 pt.
stroke
Pick the ellipse tool or press L, hold Shift-Drag to enable constrain proportion.
align
Open up Align or Shift F7 then select the 2 Objects; align it by pressing Horizontal Align Centerand Vertical Align Center.
exclude
Open up Pathfinder or Ctrl + Shift F9, hit exclude overlapping shape areas. Press Shift + F10or Stroke then set stroke to outside.
stroke again
Pick a different color, make an icon out of it, set a 3d effect, your choice. Here are a few samples that you can make out of these gears.
samples
There you have it, you can still experiment with the number of points and roundness, this is just a tutorial showing how it is done, try and experiment with the steps to get what you wanted.
I should have named this tutorial, how to make a gear in 3 easy steps: create a star, make its corners round, and straighten it. Hope you’ve learned something new from this tutorial.

Better Late Than Never.
Though I did manage to teach you on how to make a snowman. I wasn’t able to finish this 3-day tutorial and discuss on adding it to a scene and put up additional elements. As an apology, I’ll be going to give a freebie at the end of this tutorial(trees, rays, snowflakes) excluding the snowman of course that’s what this tutorial is about.
complete.gif
Ok so we have our snowman, all we need is to add it to a background and also put in some elements to make good use of it.
Rename
Before we proceed on making the other elements we need to lock our snowman layer, then create another layer and name it “background”, put it under our snowman, then hide the snowman layer after doing so.
Simple Sky
Now we’re ready to begin. First is to pick the Rectangle Tool (Ctrl + Mdraw a rectangle occupying the whole art board and using the gradient tool pick a blue and a white color then drag across the rectangle from our bottom right portion towards the top left. Now we have our simple sky.
Snow Field
Next is to draw another rectangle, this time occupying 1/3 of the artboard, this will serve as our snowfield, using the gradient tool set up a gradient of a skyblue color(C=20 M=0 Y=0 K=0 or #C7EAFB) to our left and white to our right. Move the middle slider more to the blue side just so that the white will occupy more of our gradient, while our rectangle is selected, begin dragging across it using our Gradient Tool (Ctrl + G).
When you’re satisfied to how it looks, now comes the fun part, the small humps of snow.
Snow Field with Snowman
We will use the Warp Tool (Shift + R), begin pushing and pulling parts of the snowfield. You may change its brush size while holding Alt + Shift + Drag. Now Let’s see what we’ve done, let’s see this it with our snowman…Perfect!
Bark of Tree
Done with the snowfield, let’s continue trees. They’re not as hard as it looks.
Use our Rounded Rectangle tool and draw a simple horizontal oblong, pick a gradient and use (left) 16,37,50,0 or #D6A477 (right) 43,52,80,30 or #6C5635 drag across, this will serve as the bark of the tree, set its stroke with outside and its weight to 3pt, Press Ctrl + 2 to lock it.
Trees Outline
For the leaves, imagine there are three overlapping triangles. Decreasing its size upwards, with that as our guide let’s begin drawing our leaves, delete the 3 triangles, then set stroke to outside with2pt of stroke weight.
Pine Tree
For our leaves fill = 50,0,100,25 or #6C9D31 stroke = 80,35,100,30 or #326631. Get our snowman’s shadow and duplicate it, put it under our tree and we have our tree!
Snowman with Pine Trees
Group it as one object and duplicate it. Set up random size to produce depth in our drawing.
For the sunrays. I’ll include it on my other upcoming tutorials, for the mean time you may download the rays at the last part of this tutorial.
Paste the rays at the bottom just above our simple sky. And set its blend mode to overlay. Click here to learn how to create vector sun rays ^_^
Snowflakes
Then for our finishing touches, will add the snowflakes, Change the font to Wingdings and pressCapital T on the keyboard. Expand it and set the stroke outside with a width of 2pt, pick a sky blue color as its outline and change it stroke corners to round.
Finished Snowman
Duplicate it across the sky just like what we did for the trees, and we can have a pretty interesting scene. You can use this technique for other projects and other occasions as well.
